Thyroid hormones regulate energy production. Most doctors only measure thyroid stimulating hormone to assess thyroid function. While this measures the central regulation in the brain, it does nothing to assess the thyroid gland itself (T4), or the peripheral conversion of the most active thyroid hormone (T3). Comprehensive thyroid hormone evaluation measures TSH, free T4, and free T3. (£45) Sometimes, if auto-immune involvement is suspected, we also need to check for anti-thyroid antibodies. (£40)
