Super Immune Juice

Boosts your immune response and gives a burst of energy

In a blender place

·        one cut up organic lemon (rind, seeds, everything) and

·        one peeled organic orange or ½ grapefruit.

Add enough water to blend.  Puree on high for 2-3 minutes.

Strain juice and return to blender.  Add 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper and 1-3 cloves of garlic and 1/2 tsp. of horseradish.  Puree for another minute, then drink.  If really sick, you can drink this three times a day. You can drink this daily if chronically ill or prone to frequent illness

Wet Sock Treatment

Use at first signs of cold or flu

Materials needed:       Foot bath of hot water

1 pair of thin cotton socks in ice water

1 pair of dry thick wool socks

Procedure:      Soak feet in hot water for 5-10 minutes. Dry.

Wring out cotton socks and put on feet.

Pull dry wool socks over the top of the cotton socks.

Go to bed with socks on.

Rationale:  This is known as a "heating compress", meaning that it's up to the body to heat the cold wet socks.  The body does this by dramatically increasing blood circulation which also activates the immune system. This is the best treatment for early onset of a cold or flu, and works even better with Ginger-Scallion tea:

Ginger-Scallion Tea

 Makes you sweat (a lot)

Place 4 slices of fresh ginger root and one chopped scallion (green onion) in a saucepan with one cup of water.  Bring to a boil and simmer with the pan covered for 5 minutes. Strain, add honey to taste. Drink while hot.

Mustard Pack

To relieve a tight, congested chest

Materials:        2 pieces of thin cloth (muslin works best – old cut-up tee shirt)

2 TBS. (30ml) dry mustard powder

                        ½ cup flour

                        hot water

Procedure: Mix flour and mustard.  Add hot water, enough to make a medium thin paste.  Place one piece of muslin over chest, spread mustard paste thinly over entire cloth, then cover with remaining cloth to make a mustard "sandwich". Place a piece of cling wrap over top, then cover with a heating pad or hot water bottle.

CAUTION:  Watch the skin underneath.  It should get to be a healthy pink color but not red. Left on too long the skin can burn or even blister.  Treatment usually lasts 10-20 minutes.

Rationale: the mustard pack acts as a counter irritant.  When placed directly over the lungs, it heats deeply and stimulates expectoration and loosens a tight chest.  It also stimulates immune function in the lungs.

Onion Compress

For ear ache

Chop one yellow onion coarsely. Place in a saucepan and enough water to just cover. Bring to the boil the shut off heat, cover, and let stand 10-15 minutes.  Remove onion pieces and soak washcloth in the hot juice. Place hot washcloth over the painful ear.  The juice may be reheated on the stove or in the microwave and will stay effective for an entire day. Apply as often as is needed.

Breathe-Free Onion

For stopped-up, stuffy nose

Chop one yellow onion and place in a small bowl. Drizzle about 1 TBS. of honey over the chopped onion. Go to bed and place the bowl as close to your head as safely possible (on night stand or next to your pillow). You will breathe freely all night. But be sure wake up in time to shower because you WILL smell like onions in the morning!

BONUS: You will also discover a fair amount of syrup in the bowl the next morning.  Strain it and keep it in the fridge for up to three days.  It's great for sore throats and cough.
